Our mission to shelter, house and advocate for people experiencing homelessness is directly connected to the fight against white supremacy and institutional racism that plagues our nation. We have spent the ensuing weeks since George's death discussing how to make change to our programs-which have spent 40 years serving children and women experiencing homelessness.Beginning in July, plans to contribute to that change include the following: we will start internally, with staff having the opportunity for fellowship with each other and discussion about how we, as an agency, can effect change for our staff, our residents and our community in conversation facilitated by a local African American leader.In addressing economic inequality, we know that we cannot recruit and retain professionals from communities of color without offering competitive compensation for the emotional work of serving people experiencing trauma, abuse and discrimination. All our animals are in loving foster homes. Beginning in July, our staff will find adjustments to their compensation demonstrating our commitment to an agency which represents the community we serve and in which we have grown roots in north Minneapolis.Throughout the coming year, we will conduct an audit of diversity of board, staff, shelter guests and residents of housing and seek participants through non-traditional settings to ensure a richer blend of Minnesotans in our Haven Housing community.
