In response to #CorrectUA campaign, Manchester Airport has just informed that starting from today it will be using the correct spelling 'Kyiv' to denote the capital city of #Ukraine. The #CorrectUA campaign, which began October 2, encourages Ukrainians to appeal to international media to write Kyiv rather than Kiev, a transliteration of the city name in Russian and still the most common spelling used by the global English-language press.Kiev is a spelling that appeared in the 19th-century, when the Ukrainian capital was a city of the Russian empire. "We actually launched a separate post directed at each particular individual airport or media outlet asking them directly to use the correct way of pronunciation for our capital," Horbach says.

"Even all these presidents who have been Russian-speaking recognize the power of the Ukrainian language as a symbol of Ukraine's sovereignty," Bilaniuk says.For centuries, Ukrainians have also dealt with monikers such as "Little Russia" that have contributed to a regional identity struggle, or a "younger brother complex" in modern discourse. "The desire for self-identification and correct visibility became something that is very important for us Ukrainians. "So we requested help from [the] Ukrainian population, from Ukrainian society and community around the world. "The idea behind the campaign goes back to like 25 years ago when we became independent," Horbach says. Now, particularly after Russia's 2014 invasion of Crimea and a continuing war with Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, that struggle is playing out on the map. "More popular, even, than a decade of government initiatives. One of the legend about the foundation of Kyiv goes that it was founded by four siblings: three brothers Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv and their sister Lybid. It also has to do with asserting Ukrainian sovereignty. There are related clues (shown below). The Russian pronunciation of kee-eff is very rarely heard in English and would be incorrect.. English is a strange language because it really doesn't care about the spelling of the name in the original language.

"I think it will take some time for Americans to get used to that pronunciation," Horbach says. "This erasure of Ukraine was further supported in the West by the frequent Cold War-era practice of equating the whole USSR with Russia," University of Washington anthropology professor Laada Bilaniuk Language and ethnicity have been fault lines in the country, and the Ukrainian government has tried to shore up the strength of Ukrainian as the official language — sparking ire and action from Russia. But she adds that the #KyivNotKiev campaign is less about current politics, "but more about the self-identification and the correct labeling and naming and visibility of our country. In 2017, separatists in eastern Ukraine claimed to have created a new country called "Well, there is definitely a lot of emotions going on right now because you know the relationship between our countries right now is not easy," says Horbach.

"It turned out to be more effective than [a] press release, direct diplomatic letters, and meetings, and everything else.
