Fox really dropped the ball with promotion and distribution. *SPOILERS* Donnie and April are already in a relationship, probably a secret relationship. It’s not hard for viewers to guess that Lee’s films are filled with complex truths such as these, which are never asserted but emerge through a suggestive accumulation of details and through performances that resist simple psychological vectors and instead bespeak wayward crosscurrents of emotion.

On its surface the transparent and horrifying tale of a mother’s grief, “Secret Sunshine” has the kind of emotional depth and thematic complexity that rewards repeat viewings. The answer will come close to a sturdy and time-tested definition of art, one job of which is to give intelligible and therefore consoling form to the agonies of human life. Lee has become one of South Korea’s most prominent filmmakers on the world stage: he won multiple prizes at Venice for The upheavals start about half an hour into the film.
