Having seen Nehru as a youth during a school visit, I can vouch for the physical description of the freshness of complexion though only three years before his death. A good book to read. The author has tried to give a balanced view about Nehru. Much of Crocker's points, too - especially the implications of the Five Year Plans and of the introduction of democracy to India - are particularly relevant today. In 1973 he was appointed Lieutenant-governor of South Australia, a position he held until 1982. Following his retirement from the diplomatic service in 1970, Sir Walter returned home to Adelaide where he served as a member of the Council of Adelaide University from 1971-1978. Anybody wishing to get a real sense of Nehru (free of biases, favorable or adverse, but covering all aspects, favorable or adverse) with all his complexities should read this book.

This book, written shortly after Nehru’s death, is full of invaluable first hand observations about the man and his politics. To top it, the lucid and classic prose style just acts as the perfect lens to observe Nehru from. While there is little in the book about Nehru's famously complicated personal life — other than what a fascinated and rather impressed high commissioner was able to observe — there are many and telling observations about his public conduct and behaviour, about the thought and ideas behind the course of modernisation that Nehru and his colleagues set in motion for India.

This book will bring to life a character who has become a fossilised myth owing to the hollow lip service paid by the successors and the Indian people.
