At 5:30 pm CST (2330 UTC), several tornadoes were reported near Memphis and a tornado emergency was issued for much of the Memphis metropolitan area after a large and dangerous EF2 tornado was reported near Horn Lake, Mississippi. A cold front was located to the west of the Mid-South, with a warm and unstable airmass over the region that was characterized by high temperatures in the 70s and dewpoints in the mid to upper 60s.

On Feb. 5, 2008, we were under the gun here in the Mid-South. According to records, the largest tornado in the Memphis area was an F4 in 1952 that caused 74 injuries and 16 deaths. Tornado fatalities occurred during a 12-hour period (5 p.m. – 5 a.m.) in Tennessee (31), Arkansas (14), Kentucky (7), and Alabama (5) for a total of 57 fatalities (Appendix D). A total of 85 tornadoes touched down in the southeast and Ohio Valley with 25 confirmed tornadoes right here in the Mid-South, including two in Memphis and Shelby County. There were 87 tornadoes confirmed during that time that caused 57 fatalities, 425 injuries, and $1.2 billion in damage—and the region included the Memphis metropolitan area, the Nashville metropolitan area, and Jackson, Tennessee. There was a huge and deadly tornado outbreak not only for us in the Mid-South but also for much of the southern United States. His 20-plus years of forecasting include some of the Mid-South's most memorable storms. Nearly half of the injuries were attributed to the EF-4 that touched down at Union University north of Jackson, TN around 7:00 PM that evening. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued an area of High Risk for severe weather with Memphis being in the center of the high risk area. Many buildings, transmission towers, and dormitories were damaged near Jackson, Tennessee, where an EF-4 tornado touched down after sundown.
