It does much higher damage than the rusty axe and lasts a few levels before it is outclassed again. 75 minutes in, I had the sunglasses that show items and they have +10 armor. as soon as I hit 15 I got my 2nd magic "weapon" and a flood of better weapons that you can add gems to. you could just check out other peoples homes if you are looking for a weapon.
